Are You A Facebook Junkie?

Are you a Facebook junkie?

Too much Facebook can end up making you look like a lonely loser

No-one can deny how fun and engaging Facebook is. These days, many of the 500+ million users spend several hours a day on the site. However, too much of good thing can often lead to trouble – take alcohol for example, which can lead to various problems if a person becomes addicted.

We’ve all sat back and witnessed as many of our friends fall prey to Facebook addiction. What started out as a few hours of innocent web browsing soon turned into an endless obsession. Are you close to the fine line of being a savvy and hip web user and a hopeless junkie? Here’s a checklist for you to see if you need therapy to address your Facebook Fascination.

1. You use the word Facebook in the form of a verb instead of a noun

While most people say “I love Facebook,” you say “I love to Facebook!” You excuse yourself in the middle of a social gathering to “Facebook.”

2. You experienced both a Facebook related dream and nightmare in one single night

The sweet dream began with you having received 100 e-mail notifications. It then segued into a nightmare when you realized your Facebook account was suspended, on grounds of policy violation. You woke up in a state of sheer panic.

3. You aspire to land a job in the Facebook Corporation

In two years, you will replace Mark Zuckerberg (Founder and CEO), Chris Hughes (Co-Founder) and Dustin Moskovitz (Co-Founder).

4. You Photoshop your pictures

You sharpen your nose bridge and you clear away your skin blemishes. You add some highlights to your hair (because you have no time to go to a saloon; you Facebook up to 18 hours a day). You also spend hours designing photo montages and thinking of things to say in your status updates.

5. You sometimes leap out of the shower before you’ve finished because you come up with a cool status update

Dripping wet and wrapped in your towel, you sit at your computer and post your status update before you forget it. After all, what is more important than getting praise for a cool status update on Facebook?

6. You take the time to scan really old pictures such as your baby photos and class photos

You’re looking for any excuse you can get to mass-tag your friends, or receive “Aww, how cute” or “Lol” comments.

7. You haven’t turned off the Facebook email notifications – and not because you don’t know how to

Several times a day, you check your e-mail to see if there are any updates. You’re addicted to feeling of seeing that someone has interacted with you on Facebook.

8. You contributed greatly to the Facebook entry on Wikipedia

You are the residential fact-checker and proofreader. You constantly update the page with recent news.

9. You update your Facebook any way you can

In addition to Facebooking on your computer, you also Facebook on your Blackberry or iPhone. Sometimes, you even stop at an internet cafe to ‘check your Facebook’.

10. Last Halloween, you showed up as a Facebook mascot

You got mad when people failed to make the connection. This year, you are going to show up as MySpace, with a knife pierced in your body and blood smeared all over your costume to depict the death of the former popular site.

11. Every activity on your Facebook is spaced 10 seconds apart

You update your Facebook status, and then comment on your best friend’s status. You then proceed to play the different Facebook games, making sure all you publish all your achievements onto your page.

12. You miss poking people

You really wish they would bring Poke-Your-Friend back. It is dearly missed in your opinion and is one of the reasons why Facebook is losing touch with its users.

13.    You pay real money to purchase virtual gifts

A simple birthday message to your friends is not enough. You buy virtual gifts on Facebook and give them out to your friends on their birthdays. Of course, the ones who are dearer to you get the more expensive gifts.

14.    You are still tagging people in every photo

You have failed to notice that it’s no longer cool to tag people in photos on Facebook. We all have enough photos of ourselves and would prefer people look at our personal albums, than the random tagged photos that often aren’t very cool anyway.

15.  You join Facebook groups

Collectively, you have joined over 100 Facebook groups. You are also the creative mind behind many Facebook fan pages. “Oh, it’s so much fun! People like what I like! I must be cool now! Right?”

16.  You try to turn everything into an ongoing conversation

You add comments on your friend’s photos but instead of making a remark on how good they look, you ask them how they are.  You bring up other conversation topics that should be in.

  1. Facebook definitely is an obsession. I admit, I’m hooked too. I am on the site frequently throughout the day. Much respect though to those who have not ventured onto Facebook yet! :-p

  2. okay I think I have a problem!! lol At least i’m not alone!

  3. im online at facebook like 2 hours a day!!! its reaaly cool thing! but i think i need to slow down with facebook for a while!

  4. I use Facebook daily, but a lot of these boil down to the fact that I use the site a lot for my web and graphic design business. I have built a pretty nice network and it is great to interact with both clients and those who need some site help. So I’m a Facebook junkie for good reasons I suppose! I do though on occasion play some of the games there like Mafia Wars…lol…sad I know, but what can I do its fun!
